  9. If you do not have a Silva Ranger compass, then skip to
  10. Chapter 1_C.

  12. Honest!  I really didn't plan on a Chapter 1/2.  There really is
  13. a god, and Her Name is Serendipity!  Some people have complained
  14. that Chapter 1 is too long, and then I had to make it even longer
  15. to accommodate the new Ranger.  There is a lot to cover in using
  16. the Silva Ranger, and you are learning to survey too.  It might
  17. take more than one pass to understand it all.  If it takes more
  18. than three passes, then complain.  My address and phone number
  19. are at the end of the chapter.

  21. Don't think that you can take a shortcut by reading the little
  22. Instruction Manual.  If you think that this technical writing is
  23. half-assed, then you oughta be enthralled by the Ranger
  24. Instruction Manual.  This is one case where you should NOT read
  25. the instructions before operation.  Silva's Instruction Manual is
  26. so bad that I must limit my warranty.

  34. I strongly suggest that you do not look at Silva's instructions
  35. before you look at mine, or you run the grave risk of declaring
  36. yourself stupid.

  38. Silva Compass now has a new and improved version of the old
  39. standby Ranger 15T.  The author has not personally field tested
  40. this new and improved version, and makes no claims that it is fit
  41. for any purpose whatsoever, including Surveying It Yourself.

  43. Eventually, these new and improved upgraded Rangers will be given
  44. the cave test.  Two previous models of the Ranger were used to
  45. survey many miles of cave under the most abusive of environmental
  46. conditions.  Anything that goes into a cave can be pretested by
  47. being stirred in a bucket of mud, tossed down a stone staircase,
  48. and then washed in a washing machine.  And still work.  You could
  49. depend on the old Rangers to get you to hell and back.  Or at
  50. least to survey to the end of The Backdoor To Hell Cave.

  54. There is no magic in a compass, not even a fancy compass.  If you
  55. thought that you were buying magic, then I will give you your
  56. money back.  Reluctantly.  I wish that you would have forewarned
  57. me.

  59. The only thing that might pass for magic is that the red end of
  60. the compass needle points North.  Even if you don't really
  61. understand it all, you can still survey it yourself.  I have a
  62. Master's degree in geology, and I don't understand it all either.

  64. It is sufficient for many useful purposes to have an instrument
  65. which will point in the same direction as any other of its kind.
  66. This enables people to communicate direction on The Earth's
  67. surface, or indeed under The Earth's surface.
  68.  
  69. You have probably used a common compass to tell which way was
  70. north.  And I am sure that all of you have watched The Sun rise
  71. in The East, and set in The West.  The mere fact that The Sun
  72. stays put and The Earth moves underneath it does not impair The
  73. Sun's usefulness for finding direction.
  74.  
  75. Those of you who don't live in a cave or in a big city probably
  76. have watched The Sun rise in The East many times.  You might have
  77. even noticed that The East isn't always in the same place.  The
  78. mere fact that The East isn't always in the same place does not
  79. impair its usefulness for determining direction.

  81. If you give directions from Sunrise, you must take into account
  82. the fact that Sunrise moves.  Maybe this doesn't make much
  83. difference for the job at hand, or maybe it does.  You decide.
  84.  
  85. For example, if you wanted to tell someone the direction from
  86. your house to the house in which your brother lives (without
  87. being there to point to it) you might say that it is the house
  88. towards where the sun rises and a little around to the right.  If
  89. there are only a few houses in the village, this amount of
  90. precision might work just fine.  If you are installing spaceport
  91. runway landing lights, it might not be good enuf.  You decide.

  93. Hopefully, I have gotten this far without telling you anything
  94. that you didn't already know.  A compass points North, just like
  95. a Sunrise points East.  Knowing that, the next question should
  96. be, "What is the standard deviation?"
  97.  
  98. If your question is, instead, "What is Standard Deviation?", then
  99. you are about to learn something new.  If you have any rituals
  100. which must be first performed, then perform such rituals now.

  106. Standard Deviation is merely a way to come closer to the answer
  107. to the question, "How close should I expect to come to the
  108. truth?" Just like ole Sunrise, the direction in which the compass
  109. points isn't always the same.  It might be good enuf for what you
  110. are doing, it might not.  You decide.  Standard Deviation is a
  111. more precise way to measure precision, used by people whose
  112. business it is to ask what the numbers mean.  Or don't mean.

  114. All the fancy on the Ranger enables you to determine a direction
  115. precise to about one degree.  This is quite sufficient for
  116. preliminary surveying, and most of the time this is all that you
  117. need.  Even if you need more precision, it is usually well worth
  118. your while to do a preliminary survey.  A precision of one degree
  119. is about what you can draw with a paper and pencil and ruler and
  120. protractor.  Is that good enuf?  You decide.

  122. Is it too good??  Most of the time I would be happy to have a
  123. freehand sketch on the back of an envelope.  This, plus a cryptic
  124. description of what to find when you get there, has been the
  125. standard way to describe property locations since the invention
  126. of writing.  If you need a more precise description, then with
  127. SURVEY IT YOURSELF: you have the instruments and instructions for
  128. doing so.  Continue.

  130. There are a bunch of gadgets on the Ranger which increase its
  131. precision from that of a napkin sketch to pen & ruler quality.
  132. I'll tell you more about them when you need them.
  133.  
  134. The Ranger compass can be used just like a tourist store compass
  135. to tell which way is north.  The red end of the compass needle
  136. points north.  This is good enuf to navigate while driving on
  137. unfamiliar roads, or to find your way back to the lodge.
  138.  
  139. The Ranger compass can be used just like any decent hiking
  140. compass to orient maps and get directions precise to about ten
  141. degrees.  Turn the compass until the arrow under the compass dial
  142. lines up with the compass needle.  Read the direction from the
  143. compass dial on the edge towards the landmark in question.
  144.  
  145. There is also a way to get a direction precise to one degree with
  146. the Ranger.  You will learn how to do this when the proper time
  147. comes.  Meanwhile, you can use the Ranger just like any other
  148. compass with which you are familiar.  Ignore the gadgetry you
  149. don't need.  It is ignoring you.

  154. No magic.  Magic is for magicians and bankers.  If anything about
  155. the compass seems like magic (except for the fact that the red
  156. end of the compass needle points north), then you had best think
  157. about it until the magic runs out.  It might help to get out a
  158. map of someplace familiar (the United States for example) or
  159. better yet, a globe.
